As I sit here writing this post, I keep hearing something...unsettling.
I had the window open earlier and wondered whether something winged had flown in.
The unsettling noise, sounds muffled like it has got behind the curtains and is trying to find a way out. A quiet hum followed by an excited buzz. Then silence once more.
Though I have looked repeatedly & very carefully, I can see nothing.
Then it dawns on me that we have open eaves, allowing birds, bees, wasps and more to settle and have access to our loft space.
All that separates me from their world is a few centimetres of plaster board.
Never a comforting thought.
In the Winter months it's the bats that I hear through the plasterboard, their scratching sounding like a million mice moving through the space.
In the Spring, it is the tiny birds, the Sparrows, the Tit families, and Robins nest-building and rearing their young.
As we begin to move from Spring towards Summer, I suspect that the muffled, disconcerting sounds are wasps or bees finding their new residences.
The very fact that I am disturbed says that their vibrations are reaching mine and interacting at a subtle level despite the plasterboard between us.
Who knows? One day I may even grow to like the sound.
If I can imagine that it is a dragon on the other side of the plasterboard, then perhaps I will be comforted?
